According to Vermont State Police, Hector Messier, 71, of Frelighsburg, Quebec, was leading a group of eight motorcyclists south on Georgia Shore Road around 11 a.m. when his Suzuki motorcycle crossed the centerline on a sharp curve.

Arnaldo Rios, 56, of Swanton, was driving north in an Infiniti sports utility vehicle when he witnessed Messier cross the centerline, police said, striking the front of Rios’ SUV.

AmCare Ambulance staff pronounced Messier dead at the scene. His motorcycle was totaled.

A St. Albans man, driving drunk, led police on a 20-mile pursuit at speeds in excess of 100 mph, Vermont State Police said Saturday morning.

Brendan Berno, 27, was cited on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and while criminally suspended, VSP said in a press release Saturday morning.

Later on August 8, South Burlington police added citations for attempting to elude, gross negligent operation, excessive speed and violating conditions of release. Berno was on supervised release with the Vt. Department of Corrections and had active conditions stemming from a previous DUI charge, a press release said.

Officers attempted to pull over Berno’s green Volkswagen after witnessing him driving erratically near Al’s French Frys on Williston Road around 9 p.m. Friday, nearly striking another vehicle before leaving the parking lot, a press release said.

Berno accelerated, and a pursuit began up Interstate 89. He took Exit 17, continuing to barrel down Route 7, police said.

Berno then turned left onto West Milton Road, across a lawn and back onto the road before continuing down Route 7, police said. He traveled past Milton High School at a speed in excess of 100 mph in the wrong lane, police said.

South Burlington officers discontinued once they lost sight of Berno just beyond Milton village, VSP said.

A few miles north of there, near Georgia’s Ballard Road, Berno collided with a Mitsubishi driven by Michael Plavecki, 62, of Georgia, who had pulled onto Route 7 to travel north. Both vehicles overturned into a ditch, police said.

Both operators were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Colchester and Milton police assisted in the investigation.

Berno is scheduled to appear in Chittenden Superior Court – Criminal Division on Tuesday, Aug. 11, police said.

Vermont State Police are searching for a hit and run driver they say was responsible for a motor vehicle crash in Georgia this afternoon.

Police say the driver of a white 2001 pickup truck fled into the woods after rear-ending a 2005 Honda CRV on Interstate 89 southbound, totaling both vehicles, just before noon on Friday.

Reports indicate the truck may have been traveling at high speed when it crashed into the Honda, sending both vehicles spinning off the highway in opposite directions.

Police say the truck left the west shoulder, landing on its side down a 30-foot embankment, while the car landed on its side on the east shoulder about 15 feet from the highway.

The Honda was driven by Alan Roberts, 68, of Westmont, Quebec, who was wearing a seatbelt. Roberts and his wife sustained minor injuries in the crash and have since been released from the hospital, police said.

According to VSP, the truck operator fled into the woods on foot before officers arrived. A K-9 search unit was unsuccessful in locating the driver.

The stretch of interstate between Georgia and St. Albans was temporarily closed this afternoon while debris from the crash was removed.

The truck operator’s whereabouts are still unknown, and VSP request anyone who may have information to contact the St. Albans barracks at 524-5993.

Vermont State Police arrested the man they say totaled two vehicles and fled the crash scene on Georgia’s Interstate 89 last Friday, a press release Thursday said.

Jeffrey Nichols, 27, of Enosburg was cited today for leaving the scene of an accident, grossly negligent operation, aggravated operation without owner’s consent and unlawful trespass for his involvement in the crash, VSP said.

Police say Nichols was driving a 2005 Chevy Silverado truck he took from an acquaintance’s residence in Highgate without permission when he rear-ended a 2005 Honda CRV, sending both vehicles spinning off the road in opposite directions.

Police estimated Nichols was driving approximately 123 miles per hour at the time of the crash, which sent his vehicle off the west shoulder of the highway and down a 30-foot embankment. The victim’s Honda landed on its side on the east shoulder about 15 feet from the road, police said.

After the crash, police say Nichols walked back up to the highway, where several people were parked to render aid to the crash victims.
